Colourful SHOPHOUSES

Spatial Design, Installation Art, Graphic Design

2024

Event Details: Colourful Shophouse, two 3-hour workshops, i12 Katong Mall.

Produced by: Play!

Client: National Heritage Board, as part of the Heritage Activation Node in Katong-Joo Chiat

Outcome: Celebrate Singapore’s heritage by inviting participants to create miniature shophouses, which can be added to a community art installation.

Miranda handled graphic design, spatial design for the workshop area, and the creation of an art installation for the community display.

Graphic Design: After extensively reviewing shophouse images, URA records, art history, and personal blogs, key architectural features of the Peranakan shophouse were distilled to create a craft activity that produced a model clearly resembling a shophouse, without being overly intricate for its small scale. The project highlighted her ability to blend historical accuracy with creative accessibility.

Installation Art: Sustainability was a key focus — constructed largely with recycled and reused materials. The installation served as the centrepiece, bringing individual creations together into a stunning collective artwork.

Spatial Design: Considering how participants would move and interact within the space, the layout of workshop tables, craft stations, and the art installation was optimised to create a seamless and engaging flow.

The event was a resounding success, drawing families and participants of all ages to celebrate Singapore’s heritage in a creative, interactive way.
